Have You Lost Your Cutting Edge

"Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “See, the place where we dwell under your charge is too small for us. Let us go to the Jordan and each of us get there a log, and let us make a place for us to dwell there.” And he answered, “Go.” Then one of them said, “Be pleased to go with your servants.” And he answered, “I will go.” So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees. But as one was felling a log, his axe head fell into the water, and he cried out, “Alas, my master! It was borrowed.” Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, he cut off a stick and threw it in there and made the iron float. And he said, “Take it up.” So he reached out his hand and took it." - 2 Kings 6:1-7 Here we read the story about a fervent young man who lost his axe head in the river. This man had the calling of God upon his life and was called to be part of the school of prophets. He needed to learn and so became part of Elisha’s team. Elisha was God’s prophet, a man under authority and schooled under the great prophet Elijah. We read that Elisha carried the same anointing and seeing this anointing the young men desired for Elisha to mentor them. We read in the story that the school became so popular that it outgrew where it gathered and the desire was to build something bigger and so they moved down to the river Jordan where there were plenty of trees so they could build a bigger meeting place. They recognised that for whatever reason they wanted Elisha to go with them and supervise the project. They began to cut down the trees and suddenly an axe head fell into the water, the axe head was borrowed and so there was great distress. Elisha cuts a stick and throws it into the water and the axe head floats to the surface. Elisha then declares, “Grab it” and the man reached out and grabbed it. What can we learn from this story? Have you lost your cutting edge; no longer sharp in the things of God? Then cry out to Him! Notice the student had to reach out, that was his part, and take hold of that which was lost and the good news is that it was restored. He is faithful to restore all that has been lost if you will cry out to Him. "The Lord says, 'I will give you back what you lost to the swarming locusts and the hopping locusts...once again you will have all the food you want and you will praise the Lord your God, who does miracles for you.'" - Joel 2: 25- 26
