In my reading, today I came across the text found in Psalm 104:4 which says, “He makes winds His messengers, flames of fire His servants. It reminded me of a time that has since become known as the Toronto Blessing when there were all kinds of manifestations such as laughter, tears and shaking.
I was struck by the verse that I have quoted please note the wind was the messenger and not the message! So often we pay attention to the laughter etc and not what the Lord is trying to say to us. The manifestation is to get our attention not to dwell or keep looking for manifestations.
There are other examples in scripture Moses and the burning bush see Exodus 3: 4-10 the bush was a means of getting the attention of Moses as it is burned but did not go out it was not the message, we keep on looking for “burning bushes” but ignore the message. Another example is in Acts 2: 2-3 violent wind and tongues of fire again manifestations the message was in Acts 1:8 “you will receive power” for what? To be witnesses.
Finally, there is the story of Elijah who after destroying the prophets of Baal run away into a cave. There was an earthquake, wind and fire yet again manifestations but God was not in them but they did grab Elijah’s attention to hear what? The gentle whisper of His voice “what are you doing here?” Is time for you to cease looking for manifestations and incline your ear to hear His small voice?
